By now you've probably heard of a million ways to be a little more green. We just thought it would be great to list a few of OUR favorite ways ... and we hope you try them out! Remember, everything takes a little getting used to, but it doesn't take long before these are part of your every day routine.
LGF's 11 Sustainable Steps (When 10 Just Isn't Enough)
- Instead of buying paper towels, use cloth napkins for the kitchen and old t-shirts as cleaning rags.
- Start a worm bin! You can find plans on our website under Free Activities. It is a lot of fun!
- Use cloth diapers. It doesn't take much effort and the payoff (both environmentally AND money-wise) is HUGE! We suggest FuzziBunz, which you can purchase from our online marketplace!
- Ride your bike. This is not only a great way to skip the gas pumps, but will also melt the waistline from all that organic ice cream you've been into!
- Buy local and buy organic when possible. Hey, we know it's not always possible to buy organic, but do it for yourself and your family when you can. It's sustainable and gives you peace of mind knowing that your veggies were farmed with love and not harmful chemicals.
- Turn your computer off when you aren't using it. Just like turning off a light, it drains energy and costs you money.
- Make your own laundry detergent. It's cheap, easy, and fun! It'll save you a TON of money.
- Scoop the poop! That's right ... contrary to popular belief, dog and cat manure is NOT appropriate "fertilizer" for your soil! Pet feces has devastating effects on our waterways.
- Get rid of that lawn! Always wanted a rock garden? Now, THAT is a sustainable idea. One hour of work with a gas-powered lawnmower contributes the same harmful emissions as 250 CARS! And who wants to spend 40 hours a year mowing when you can do all of these other fun, green projects?
- Spend some time at home. As a society, we love to go out ... a LOT. But staying at home will not only cultivate creative ideas and fun times with the family, but it also saves time, money and energy. We love working around our house and thinking of lots of sustainable projects.
- Start composting. In addition to that worm bin, go ahead and start a compost bin outside with a little 4 x 4 ft chicken wire enclosure. Yard waste (grass and leaves) is a GREAT way to get started.
